Summer is the most magical time to spend in the vineyard, immersed in a sea of flowers, heady scents and the buzzing of insects. The vineyard and the earth are in ferment exploding in a symphony of life, the days stretch out along with the vines tirelessly, the shoots stretch out and the inflorescences turn into sweet, juicy grapes.
It is precisely at this time, when nature is at its best, that caring for the vineyard becomes essential, to lovingly accompany the lush growth of the grapes.
When we speak of green vine pruning we consider the set of operations to manage the vine foliage such as topping and stripping, which allow optimal development of the bunch in view of the harvest. At the end of June, topping takes place, an operation in which excessively high shoots are removed in order to encourage the growth of new, more active leaves during the period of cluster formation, to aid in the uniform distribution of energy and resources and in maintaining a strong, balanced structure that favours subsequent care and harvesting operations.
Defoliation or leaf stripping, on the other hand, consists of removing excess leaves to improve aeration of the plant and sun exposure. It is carried out before the harvest in order to obtain grapes with the right sugar content.
Finally, in forms of vine training such as the ‘Guyot’, it is important to carry out vine tying several times during the season in order to fix the permanent organs of the vine to a support structure and make their vegetative development uniform so as to achieve a balance in grape production.
August is just around the corner and thanks to these ancient and wise gestures, the vines can develop in health.
At this point, all that remains is to wait patiently for nature to take its course, allowing the grapes to ripen luxuriantly in anticipation of the harvest. It is then that we will reap the fruits of so much dedication and create our wines of great quality, witnesses to the work and passion that animated the summer in the vineyard.
